David Ronca founded RoncaTech in 2025, after he retired from Meta with the goal of helping companies solve hard video quality and scale problems, and to build and manage high-performance engineering teams. In addition, David is committed to mentoring engineers and leaders, and building diverse and respectful team cultures.
David is an internationally recognized expert with more than 30 years of multimedia experience. In 2000, he joined InterVideo, and worked on DVD editing/authoring, and broadcast & DVR technologies. In 2007, David joined Netflix where he built the Encoding Technologies team from 0->1, and pioneered encoding innovations such as inspection-based video processing, map-reduce and complexity-based encoding, VMAF, and global subtitle standardization (IMSC 1.1).
For the last 5 years, he has worked at Meta, first as the Director of Video Processing, and then as a Senior Video Research Scientist. At Meta, David worked to scale high-quality VOD experience to 3.5 billion users around the world. Most recently, David has helped Meta to move to AV1 as their primary video David's work has resulted in the awarding of 4 technical Emmys to Netflix, and 1 technical Emmy to Meta, and 23 patents.
